That depends upon the document's purpose and target audience. Surprisingly, length is a consideration, but not necessarily in the way you might think: technical papers that will be used as reference tools often must be long and comprehensive. A marketing piece used to spark interest in a prospect, however, is delivered more effectively when it is short, focused, and well-constrained. The rule when it comes to any marketing collateral is: don't take 10 pages to make a point that can be made in three (and that's not just because three pages are cheaper than 10).
Most importantly, both technical and marketing documents should be crisp and clear, well written by someone who understands both the technical impact of your product or service and the business deliverable that potential customers should expect.
IA would be pleased to discuss our approach to both technical writing and marketing collateral. If you have questions, please contact us anytime! We look forward to hearing from you.
